Top SIP plans: 5-year SIP returns by category

What a ₹5,000 monthly SIP started 5 years ago is worth today, fund by fund. ₹3,00,000 invested in each.

These are real results, not projections: we replayed a ₹5,000 SIP on the first NAV of every month for the last 5 years in every direct growth fund (NAVs up to 30 Oct 2026). Funds are ranked by SIP return (XIRR) within their category, because comparing a small cap fund with a large cap fund mixes very different risks. How we calculate.

How to use this list

  • Pick the category first, from your goal and how long you can stay invested. Small and mid caps swing far more than large caps.
  • Within a category, a fund near the top over five years can slip in the next five. Look at its expense ratio, size and how it did against its benchmark too.
  • Work out the amount with the goal planner or the SIP calculator, and compare funds side by side in Compare.

Questions

How are these SIP returns worked out?

We invest ₹5,000 at each fund's first NAV of every month for the last 5 years (60 instalments), value the units at the latest NAV, and work out the annual return with XIRR, the same method your fund statement uses. Direct growth plans only; stamp duty and taxes are left out, and funds under ₹100 crore are excluded.

Will these funds give the same returns in future?

No one can say. These are past results over one particular five years. A category that led this period (small caps, for example) can lag in the next, and rankings change every year. Use the list to see how SIPs behaved, not to predict.

What is XIRR and why not just the fund's 5-year return?

A fund's 5-year return assumes you invested once, five years ago. In a SIP each instalment is invested for a different length of time, so XIRR, which accounts for every date, is the fair measure of what a SIP investor actually earned.

Why do direct plans show higher returns than what my statement says?

If you invest through a distributor you are probably in the regular plan, which charges a higher expense ratio every year, so its returns are lower than the direct plan's.

How much should I invest each month?

Start from your goal: how much you need and by when. Our goal planner works out the monthly SIP for a target amount, and the SIP calculator shows what a monthly amount could grow to.

Past performance does not guarantee future returns. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme-related documents carefully. BookMyMutualFund is an information service, not an investment adviser, and this list is not a recommendation to buy any fund.
